As Charlestonians gained wealth they embraced the NeoClassical architectural style and constructed homes of considerable grandeur. This design period gained popularity in the years leading up to the Civil War. Neoclassical architecture is characterized by columns, smooth walls, and arched windows. The Charleston County Courthouse at the “Four Corners of Law” offers a good example of the Neoclassical architectural style in Charleston, South Carolina. Looking for a place to stay during your trip to Charleston’s house museums?

It is an artist’s garden, with extraordinary color contrasts, and flower bed ideas with unusual planting companions. 'Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant were introduced to a radical new style of art from the continent by the art critic Roger Fry – which used bright colors and dynamic, abstract patterns. ‘The Bloomsbury group were always looking outwardly to Europe and beyond for inspiration, and throughout the house there are lots of objects that hint at the family’s European outlook and reflect their international travels,' explains Darren. The move to the farmhouse was an opportunity for them to explore new ways of thinking, living and working. The sheriff’s office released footage from the Al Cannon Detention Center Sallyport, a secure, covered driveway where arrestees are brought to be booked into the jail. The video includes the time the patrol vehicle pulls into the Sallyport through the time an ambulance leaves with Kluczinsky inside.

The library contains a lovely collection of artwork by a range of 19th and 20th century artists, many which Clive Bell collected. The house is filled with the stunning artworks and hand-painted furniture of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, including murals, painted doors, and even bedspreads. Each room is a unique work of art, with its own color scheme and aesthetic, yet they all harmoniously blend together to create a cohesive whole. Charleston has long been admired as the belle of the south, with street upon cobblestone street lined with those terraced, colorful mansions and flowering trees. When you stand on the Battery and look across Charleston harbor, you can see Fort Sumter, the attack on which started the Civil War.

Perhaps the most exquisite thing about Charleston are the murals on the walls of almost all the rooms. Hand painted by Bell, Grand and friends, they have been marvelously preserved. These murals are easily visible in the film, Vita and Virginia, but if you are at all a Bloomsbury fan, a pilgrimage to Charleston to see them in person is worth writing home about (or in your journal like Mrs. Woolf herself).

Heyward-Washington House

There are often events surrounding Charleston’s exhibitions, and every year there is a festival with talks and workshops alongside the exhibition offering. When I visited there were several incredible benches made by Betty Woodman for the space, which brightened it up even further. The fish rug is one of my favourite things in the entire house—it’s so charming! Lewes is a really quick 17 minute train journey from Brighton - so it’s the perfect destination during a visit to the area. Artists and makers including Bridie Hall, Wallace Sewell, Molly Mahon and Monika Forsberg have contributed pieces to the auction, making it a stylish way to help out the trust. Alongside the antiques shops, there are lots of quirky independent brands to explore in Lewes. Closet and Botts is a darling homewares and clothing store which is so well-curated.

‘Proudly an artist’s garden, the walled garden is a riot of color,' says Darren. The dining room chairs at Charleston House are an example of items of furniture created by the Omega Workshops. Originally the frames were a deep red color and the cane was golden – a dramatic design that would have stood out in any room. The interiors are a lesson in how to juxtapose unexpected color combinations for rooms and also turn ordinary items of furniture into pieces of art in their own right.

The interiors of Charleston: the house the Bloomsbury Group turned in to a living work of art

By 1920, the home was slated for demolition, but a group of locals formed the Preservation Society of Charleston to save it. On the brink of the Civil War, General P.G.T. Beauregard watched from the house as shots were fired from Fort Sumter. The home later passed to Alston’s daughter Susan, who then gave it to cousin Henry Augustus Middleton Smith in 1922. You can purchase a 1-day pass which will more than pay for itself by visiting only 3 attractions. The Heyward-Washington House, built in 1772, is one of the oldest surviving residences in Charleston. Charleston has many dozens of historically-significant properties, the great majority of which are privately owned and occupied and not open to the public.

“A lot of people, perhaps especially from the LGBTQ+ community, are drawn to how the Bloomsbury group created an alternative vision of a chosen family,” says Nathaniel Hepburn, director of Charleston. Dotted with portraits of children, the house is imbued with a vibrant spirit of family and love. The fashion designer Susie Cave spoke at the recent Charleston festival of the kinship she feels between the house and the chosen family of creatives who make up her Vampire’s Wife design team. The most fashionable house in England isn’t on an elegant London street or in a chocolate-box Cotswolds village, but at the end of a long, narrow, often muddy country lane riven deep in a fold of the Sussex Downs.

Charleston Farmhouse was a central meeting place for the Bloomsbury group, a circle of writers, artists, and intellectuals who pushed the boundaries of art, literature, and social norms. The group included Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster, John Maynard Keynes, and Lytton Strachey, among others. From 1916, artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant lived at Charleston House, along with Duncan's lover David Garnett and also Vanessa's two young sons, Julian and Quentin.

The preserved elements served as an inspiration to interior designers, like Rebecca Gardner of Houses and Parties, whose team transformed the dining room into a party fit for a king, or rather, a Frog Prince. Charleston sightseeing tours are an easy and fun way to learn about Charleston from an expert. Many of the area’s local guides are Charlestonians with ties to the city that go back 5, 8, or even 10 generations!

Preserved rather than restored, the house offers an insight into the decline in fortunes of its owners in the years since the Civil War. Charleston is something of a hidden treasure – positioned just off the A27 in a fold of East Sussex, the house is tucked behind an excess of foliage and lush trees, its weathered tiles rising among narcissus and dahlias. Reaching it feels like encountering an old friend at a party, or, perhaps, making a new one –  whether you’re a frequent visitor or just discovering it for the first time, you instantly feel welcome. It’s the sustainable way to travel around this historic part of the district, and even better, Charleston are offering ‘Green Traveller’ house, garden and exhibition ticket discounts to Bloomsbury Route users. Bloomsbury was very much about throwing off the shackles of Victorian polite society; Woolf and Bell had been awkward debutantes before rejecting that life for bohemianism, pens and paintbrushes.
